Piastri charges hard against Alpine and reveals the reasons for his flight to McLaren

The “lack of clarity” of Alpine is the reason why Oscar Piastri decided not to continue in Alpine and sign for McLaren, something that the British team made official this week as soon as the FIA validated the contract signed between the two. The Australian, who will replace his compatriot Daniel Ricciardo, has been very critical of the French team, pointing out that his movements were “confusing”. Piastri had signed an agreement with McLarenAlpine considered that he had a contract until the end of 2023 with the possibility of extending it and, finally, the Contract Recognition Board intervened to determine that he could sign for what will be his team in the coming years.

“The CRB ruling has confirmed that he did not have a contract for the 2023 season with Alpine. It was free to choose my destiny and I felt that McLaren was a great opportunity. To be completely honest, there was a lack of clarity about my future in the Alpine team,” criticized the driver on the official Formula 1 website. It must be remembered that when Piastri made the decision to look for a seat for 2023, Alpine had then offered Piastri Fernando Alonso a new contract, but finally the Spaniard chose to go to Aston Martin. “They publicly declared that they wanted to continue with Fernando for at least one or two more years. I respect that. But after spending the year away, my hopes were firmly pinned on a seat at Alpine but the lack of clarityLike Fernando, I had a bit of a strange feeling in the negotiations, I didn’t feel that staying was the right decision for me.”

That “lack of clarity” about his future and “a breakdown of confidence”, coupled with a “very attractive offer from McLaren” led him to change, but Alpine came to announce him as Alonso’s replacement. “I made my decision well in advance of Alonso’s departure, which made Alpine’s announcement probably even more confused and upset because we had told the team that it was not going to continue. It was quite annoying because the ad was fake and it also denied me the opportunity to say a proper goodbye to everyone at Enstone,” said the Australian, who remains Alpine’s reserve driver until the end of the season.

Piastri is full of praise for McLaren, where he will race in 2023: “The team has big plans and the future is enchanting. I’m also really looking forward to working and driving alongside Lando Norris. I know it will be a challenge, but I feel that McLaren is the right place to start my life in Formula 1. I am super excited to start”, he commented.
