Olympics 2036: Egypt is considering a bid to host the Summer Olympics

Egypt is considering its candidacy for the 2036 Olympic Games, Minister of Youth and Sports Achraf Sobhi said this Saturday while receiving the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach. “President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi has given his agreement for Egypt to offer itself as host of the 2036 Olympics,” he said in front of the German official on a regional tour. “Egypt has solid sports infrastructure and if it can host the Olympics, it will be historic for it,” reacted Thomas Bach during a joint press conference with Mr. Sobhi in the new administrative capital, one of the mega projects of Sissi which comes out of the sands about fifty kilometers from Cairo.

In early September, Egypt announced that it was in consultation with Greece and Saudi Arabia to submit a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup. Cairo regularly prides itself on having hosted numerous world championships over the past three years, including the World Handball Championship in 2021.

Germany, Mexico, Turkey, India and Qatar already interested

The bidding process for the 2036 Olympics has yet to begin. However, Germany, Mexico, Turkey, India and Qatar have already indicated their interest. In the meantime, after the 2024 edition which will take place in Paris, the 2028 Olympic Games will take place in Los Angeles (United States/California), then the 2032 Olympic Games will be organized in Brisbane (Australia).

As an extension of a series of Asia (Tokyo 2020, contested in 2021) – Europe (Paris) – America (Los Angeles) – Oceania (Brisbane), the candidacy of Egypt, a bridge between Africa and the Middle East, could highlight the opportunity of a candidacy from the African continent, unprecedented up to now.
