Swiss footballer dies at the age of only 34

Sad news from Switzerland.

Swiss footballer Nicolas Schindelholz lost his battle with lung cancer and died on Sunday at the age of 34.

In 2020, the defender, who played for FC Aarau and FC Luzern, among others, received the horror diagnosis of lung cancer. In 2021 he had to end his career.

Particularly sad: the footballer leaves behind his wife and four children.

According to the Swiss newspaper “Blick”, his ex-teammates from FC Aarau were only informed after the intermediate round in the Swiss Football Cup on Sunday against FC Basel (1: 3). So that the professionals could concentrate on the cup match.

Only after the final whistle was the sad news announced by the stadium announcer, whereupon some Aarau professionals burst into tears.

In an emotional statement on Twitter, the club said goodbye to the central defender, who made 96 appearances in the Swiss Super League (1st Swiss League).

FC Aarau: “Our former central defender Nicolas Schindelholz died of cancer at the age of just 34. FC Aarau expresses its heartfelt condolences to the relatives and wishes them a lot of strength during this difficult time.”

Philipp Bonorand, the president of FC Aarau, told “Nau.ch”: “All of us at FC Aarau are very sad and our thoughts are with Nicolas Schindelholz’s family. Our condolences to his family and four children.”

And further: “With him we not only lose a good former player, but above all a great person. In moments like this, football becomes an unimportant thing.”

The club FC Thun also said goodbye to its ex-player.

The club on its website: “The FC Thun family is incredibly sad. We are deeply saddened by the news of Nicolas Schindelholz’s death. Nicolas was with us in the club from 2009 to 2017 and we were able to experience many beautiful moments together. We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family.”
