Cologne Ultras start bloody stadium fights

Ugly scenes before Cologne’s Euro game in Nice!

Around 45 minutes before kick-off, 50 ultras from Cologne went masked towards the home curve to riot. They shot Bengalos at folders and fans, e-scooters and seat shells flew. At that time, the police were not yet in the stadium.

The France fans threw and beat back. There were violent beating scenes, during which at least one middle-ranked fan fell off the parapet.

The police used tear gas. The stadium announcer threatens to cancel the game and make a decision at the green table.

When the police finally pushed the Cologne ultras back into their corner, the thousands of normal FC fans chanted “we are from Cologne and you are not”, the ultras whistled.

Later, the Nice Ultras attack the Cologne block again. The game is about to be cancelled, there is a Uefa security meeting in the stadium.

Then the decision: The game takes place and is scheduled to kick off at 7:40 p.m. Uefa made the decision in consultation with the local authorities. In the first incident, however, the game should definitely be stopped.

The police are advancing, trying to bring the situation under control. The Ultras throw objects like chairs, stands, etc.

Before that, Cologne captain Jonas Hector (32) went onto the lawn at 6:20 p.m. and spoke to the fans via microphone: “We’re really keen to play the game with you guys. We also want the game to happen. But we have to say that we don’t approve of that – we don’t like it at all. We busted our asses on that last year and in the playoff games. And we would love to do that with you, and that’s why I’m asking you: keep your nerve, stay calm, support us as best you can. That’s what the club wants too. That we stand together and in peace just celebrate football and not violence. Thank you.”

At 6:33 p.m., Cologne responded with a statement on Twitter: “Unfortunately, the kick-off of the #OGCKOE game was delayed due to violent riots between people from both fan camps in the stadium and in the stands. We are currently discussing the background. Now the UEFA security meeting is happening.”

Continue: “The #effzeh condemns all forms of violence. We stand for fair sporting dealings and respectful behavior. We are very sorry for all the peaceful fans who have made today a Cologne football festival.”
