Never happened before: rider/analyst Jan Bakelants undergoes doping test on the VRT | Remarkable

Cyclists have had to fill in their “whereabouts” for years. This way the inspectors know where and when to knock on the door of the cyclists for a doping test.

But nobody would have dared to think that you can even expect a check on the VRT. Early this morning the unthinkable happened.

Jan Bakelants trotted up to presenter Ruben Van Gucht as an analyst of the World Cycling Championships, when he suddenly had to pee in the pot. Because yes, there was a controller from the World Anti-Doping Agency WADA at the door.

Bakelants: “Life outside the World Cycling Championships clearly continues (laughs). The people from WADA came to the VRT. It is not easy to get in here, but they succeeded.”

“I saw certain people look surprised when I walked down the hall with a jar. I didn’t expect it myself, because we are already late in the season. In the Vuelta I had already experienced a lot of checks, so I thought that the rest of the year would be a bit calmer.”

“But apparently they are still awake and there is still a budget to work on their checks…”
