Heroes jersey from Bern has to be auctioned

July 4, 1954. Germany creates the world champion miracle, beating the big favorites Hungary 3:2. Horst Eckel, the youngest hero of Bern, died in December 2021 at the age of 89 in his homeland Palatinate.

Now the treasures from his estate have to be auctioned off.

The biggest: Eckel’s final jersey from the 1954 World Cup. It was specially brought back from the football museum in Dortmund.

Also for sale: The World Cup gold medal. Likewise DFB gifts (fridge, alarm clock) and the soccer shoes from 1954.

Daughter Dagmar Eckel does not find it easy to auction her father’s things: “Anyone who knows me knows that I am attached to every single item. Everyone has their own story. Papa said to me when he was alive: ‘Objects are objects. Take care of mama, make sure she’s alright forever. Family is the most important thing to me.’”

She is now only giving away the things so that her mother Hannelore Eckel (85), who needs care, can continue to be cared for around the clock in the disabled-friendly apartment.

She hopes to raise around 280,000 euros from the auction.

Dagmar Eckel: “I would like to continue to give my mother, who is my father’s manager, a decent life. She deserves it so much. My father also wanted it that way.”

The auction is to take place on November 19 as part of an event organized by Agon Verlag.
