Unusual action of a real traditional club.
From the 2023/24 season, third-division club MSV Duisburg will provide a team for the district league C in matches played by the Lower Rhine Football Association (FVN). The special feature: The team should consist exclusively of fans.
Andreas Jörißen and Christian Kern, who were elected department heads at the founding meeting: “They are the ones who will represent the club in the local leagues from next season and thus make the zebras visible in the amateur field as well.”
The idea had been buzzing around in the club’s heads for a long time, as stated on the traditional club’s website.
Jörißen continues: “It is important to us that MSV does not incur any direct costs or additional expenses by founding a fan team. In this way, the team will organize itself and also support itself financially.”
The “Glory Amateurs” will play on the pitch of the MTV Union Hamborn (Duisburg district), which will make its pitch available and thus become the new home for the “amateurs”.

Traditional club Duisburg – founding member of the Bundesliga
MSV Duisburg is one of the large traditional clubs in North Rhine-Westphalia. He is a founding member of the Bundesliga and was runner-up in the inaugural season. In 1979 the club even reached the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup (out against the eventual winner Borussia Mönchengladbach).

The club was relegated from the Bundesliga for the last time in 2008. Today the “Zebras”, as the team is called because of the blue and white striped jerseys, play in the 3rd division. After nine matchdays, MSV, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary this year, is in twelfth place with eleven points. Recently there was a 1-0 defeat at SC Verl. On the next matchday after the international break, it’s against Halleschen FC.
