Miami, Florida /
Don Mattingly will not return as manager of the Miami Marlins the 2023 Major League Baseball season (MLB), confirmed himself this Sunday, September 25, and announced that he and team officials have decided that a new voice is needed to lead the club in the future.
Mattingly’s contract expires when the season ends. He said he met with Marlins primary owner Bruce Sherman and general manager Kim Ng to discuss the future and that “all parties agreed” that it is time for a change.
“I am proud and honored to have served as manager of the Marlins for the past seven years and have enjoyed my experiences and relationships that I have developed within the organization,” Mattingly said. “I look forward to spending time with my family in Evansville, Indiana and any future projects.”
Mattingly, the all-time leader by a wide margin in wins as club manager, is finishing his seventh season with the Marlins. He entered Sunday’s game the 25th with a 437-583 record in Miami, with only one winning season in those seven years, a 31-29 mark in the shortened 2020 campaign when the team made its first playoff appearance since 2003. .
“Jorge, I just think it’s amazing that the Marlins had a 0.2% chance of playoffs on March 11. We took the NL East by storm! We surprised everyone!! Now about a week remains, and we sit in 2nd place with a 61% of playoff ent — no I didn’t come out to discuss the game?” pic.twitter.com/ovbKDFMAl6

Mattingly, 61, has managed for 12 seasons, the first five with the Los Angeles Dodgers. All five of those clubs had winning records, with three of them reaching the playoffs.
The Marlins expected similar success, but it didn’t go as planned. Mattingly was the 2020 National League Manager of the Year after leading Miami to the playoffs, but other than that, the franchise has been constantly rebuilding.
