CIES study Market value vs. fee: These clubs have paid too much for new signings in the last 10 years. The top 10 transfer fee wasters at a glance.

That CIES Football Observatory repeatedly conducts studies on the world of professional football. The latest research has been devoted to the transfer spending of clubs from the top 5 leagues in Europe. Which Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 clubs paid too much for their new signings when comparing transfer fee and player market value? The transfer period of the last ten years was compared.

As an example: If player XY is signed for a transfer fee of 100 million euros, but his market value is only 60 million euros, the investment was 40 million euros above the estimated value. This sum is then included in the assessment.

Not surprisingly, Manchester United tops this list. There is also a club from the Bundesliga in the top 10.

Only clubs with at least ten transfers with a fee since July 2012 were included in the list. The triggering of exit or purchase option clauses were not taken into account.
