Malaysia Failed to Qualify U-20 Asian Cup, Bye-bye 2023 U-20 World Cup

Malaysian National Team definitely failed to qualify for the finals 2023 Asian U-20 Cup in Uzbekistan after finishing third in Group E of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup Qualification, Sunday (18/9).

Malaysia was eliminated after losing 6-2 to South Korea at the Mongolian MFF Football Center. The winning goals for Taegeuk Warriors were scored by Lee Young Jun (57′, 88′), and Bae Joon Hoo (50′).

Meanwhile, Malaysia could only reply through goals from Adam Farhan (55′) and Aliff Izwan in the 68th minute.

The defeat made Malaysia’s final points in Group E amounted to four from three matches and while in second place under South Korea after the match.

However, Malaysia’s position in the Group E standings had to go down after Mongolia slaughtered Sri Lanka 6-0. The victory sent the hosts up to the runner-up position and shifted Malaysia after winning in goal productivity over the 2022 AFF U-19 Cup winners.

As a result, Malaysia failed to qualify for the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup after being ranked third in the final standings of Group E. Meanwhile, Mongolia still had to wait for the results in another group to qualify as one of the best runners-up.

By failing to qualify for the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup in Uzbekistan, Hassan Sazali Waras’ team’s hopes of going to the 2023 U-20 World Cup in Indonesia also disappeared.

The 2023 U-20 Asian Cup will be the venue for the 2023 U-20 World Cup Qualification. Outside of Indonesia as the host, the Asian Confederation (AFC) gets four slots in the U-20 World Cup finals next year.

The four semifinalists of the 2023 U-20 Asian Cup will automatically qualify for the 2023 U-20 World Cup in Indonesia.

So far, only South Korea has passed the qualifying round as group winners to the U-20 Asian Cup finals.
