Jan Vertonghen estimates the Red Devils’ chances at the World Cup: “Argentina and Brazil are big favorites, we are just below in category” | Red Devils

On Thursday, Belgium will play Wales in the Nations League. On Sunday it is the turn of the Netherlands. How important are those duels according to Vertonghen with a view to Qatar? “Important. Very important in fact, because due to the incomprehensible and dramatic timing – a ‘great’ decision by FIFA – you have no normal preparation for the World Cup. If that World Cup falls in the summer, you have time to recover physically and rest or just give boys playing minutes. That’s not now. That is why the matches in the Nations League are actually a preparation for the World Cup. While it should also do important matches in themselves. The Nations League is a trophy. Maybe it doesn’t have that value yet. But the Conference League didn’t have that either, until Mourinho won it.”

How does Vertonghen himself estimate the Devils’ chances in Qatar? “We are not the big favorite in Qatar. Those are Argentina and Brazil. I think we’re in a category below that. If we want to have a chance, everyone has to be super fit and reach a super high level. Or is that just not the problem for a few guys? Therefore, it is a shame that you do not have that preparation. (grins) Maybe we’ll be fresh.”
