“I am attracted to enter this project full of ambition”

Oriol Romeu has become important at Girona. He knows the club has made a good investment in him and isn’t afraid to take on the responsibility or pressure of being the franchise player this season. With 30 years and a long career at the first level for Barça, Chelsea, Stuttgart, Valencia and Southampton, Romeu returns to Catalonia to be close to home. Obviously, the proximity to Ulldecona is not the only incentive that has led him to sign for three seasons with Girona. “I am attracted to enter a new project full of ambition that has the challenge of consolidating itself in Primera. I was looking forward to starting a new adventure after many years in England and hopefully it will be a long-lasting adventure”, Romeu said yesterday in his first words as a white-and-red player. The release might not be long. In fact, the injuries to Terrats and Herrera open the door for him, tomorrow in Palma, to become a starter. The player trained yesterday and says he is “available”.

Negotiations with Southampton to release Romeo have been complicated. Yesterday Quique Cárcel thanked the effort made by the player and the agent (Màgic Díaz) and the willingness of the English club to resolve the matter. Of course, despite not talking about transfer figures, the operation got off the ground thanks to the arrival of two young talents from Manchester City (Larios and Edozie) to Southampton, who made everything cheaper. “It has been a long negotiation, which I knew was very complicated. If it has happened, it is thanks to the player”, said Cárcel, who confirmed that Girona had paid a “small transfer”, the amount of which he did not reveal for “confidentiality”.

Romeu detailed yesterday that he spoke with Míchel and that he knows what football Girona plays because he has followed him since Aleix Garcia, from Ulldecona like him, returned. “I like to be the protagonist with the ball, yes, but I can also provide strength in defense and an extra physicality needed to compete well at these levels,” he said. In this sense, Romeu explained that having played for so many years at a high level allows him to “know how to manage various situations generated by football, both successful and more complicated”. The midfielder also assured that he is not afraid of the pressure that may fall on him due to being called to be an important player for the project. “The pressure is put on us by the players themselves. It’s a nice pressure, not negative, and it doesn’t make me anxious or afraid. The intention of the club is to have a player who contributes inside and outside the club. I have this mentality of knowing what I’m coming to contribute. It’s a motivating and encouraging challenge,” he said.
