The Malaysian men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, high-fived while competing in the quarter-finals of the Indonesia Open 2022 at Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Senayan, Jakarta, 17 June 2022.

BOLASPORT.COM – The Malaysian men’s doubles pair, Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik, have received an incentive of 500,000 Malaysian Ringgit (approximately IDR 1.65 billion) for their success in winning the inaugural world title for Malaysia recently.

Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik emerged as the 2022 World Champion after defeating Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan, 21-19, 21-14 in the final which took place on August 28 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria said that each badminton player will receive Malaysian Ringgit 250,000 from the award given by the parent body and several other official sponsors.

Tan said that the achievements of the world number 5 pair deserve appreciation and hope that more young athletes from the country will follow in his footsteps.

“We are here to celebrate the success of Aaron and Wooi Yik, because what they have achieved is truly extraordinary and deserves to be appreciated today. I’m sure more (incentives) will come,” said Norza as reported by BolaSport.com from The Star.

Norza said that badminton was quickly becoming a lucrative sport. Norza noted that credit should also be given to backroom management and staff for drafting a blueprint for the 2024 strategic project, three years ago.

“Following disappointing performances in recent years, we came up with Project 2024. A strategic plan with the target to win the country’s first Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics and to regain the 2024 Thomas Cup.”

“We stuck to our plan and trusted the process. Today, three years on, we got our first world champion (Aaron/Wooi Yik). We will continue, and we believe it will lead us to bigger things, ‘ said Norza.

“What Aaron/Wooi Yik have achieved is incredible. They deserve the recognition. I would like to thank BAM, our sponsors Petronas, Yonex and 100PLUS. I hope this will inspire others.”
