After announcing the separation of the Ballon d’Or from FIFA, France Football magazine defined what will be different about the award. In addition to the voting system, the ceremony itself will change, as well as the number of participating athletes.

Independent and linked only to the French periodical, as it was from 1956 to 2009, the Ballon d’Or award will be voted on only by journalists from all over the world, and no longer a team of technicians and captains, as it became in 2010. The list of nominees will increase from 23 to 30 and there will no longer be an intermediate stage to define the three finalists, with all 30 positions announced on the same day.

France Football itself was responsible for announcing the separation with the highest football entity last Friday. FIFA has not yet made a statement, therefore, it has not indicated how it will organize the gala ceremony. Everything indicates that the award for “Best player in the world”, which lasted from 1991 until 2009, when it became part of the Ballon d’Or, will once again be held as before.

In the six years that it was unified, the Fifa Ballon D’or was monopolized by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentine star won four times (2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015), against two of the Portuguese ace (2013 and 2014).
