Fourth case in a few months: Hertha professional Boetius receives a testicular tumor diagnosis

Fourth case in a few months
Hertha professional Boetius is diagnosed with a testicular tumor

Another Bundesliga player is diagnosed with a testicular tumor. Once again it hits a professional from the Hertha BSC squad. Midfielder Jean-Paul Boetius will undergo surgery later this week. Managing Director Fredi Bobic is cautiously optimistic.

Bundesliga club Hertha BSC will have to do without midfielder Jean-Paul Boetius indefinitely. The 28-year-old was diagnosed with a tumor in his testicles. He will undergo surgery later this week. The former Mainz player is the fourth Bundesliga player in just a few months to be diagnosed with a testicular tumor.

“As bitter as this news is at first, we are full of hope and confidence that Jean-Paul will recover and return to our circle as soon as possible,” Hertha managing director Fredi Bobic was quoted as saying in the club’s announcement. “Until his return, we will give him every conceivable support. We will stand together as a Hertha family and wish him nothing but the best.”

Boetius switched from FSV Mainz to Hertha BSC in the summer. The Dutchman has played in six out of seven Bundesliga games for the club in the capital this season. He was in the starting XI in two games. So far he hasn’t been able to score a goal.

Richter is back on the court

Boetius is the second Hertha player to be diagnosed with a testicular tumor this season. Striker Marco Richter fought his way back into the team in no time after an operation in the summer of 2022 and scored his first goal in the third game after his return.

“Of course it’s a gripping story, how Marco dealt with it. And that’s the icing on the cake with this dream goal today,” said coach Sandro Schwarz after Richter’s goal in the 2-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen in mid-September. Guest keeper Lukas Hradecky couldn’t escape the emotions either. “I don’t begrudge anyone more than Marco Richter to score a goal like that,” said the Finn after the goal from 25 meters out.

Baumgartl too, Haller not yet

Timo Baumgartl has now also overcome his illness. The Union Berlin defender returned to the pitch last weekend. He was in the starting line-up in the 2-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg and was substituted after about an hour to a standing ovation. “I imagined that during chemotherapy, during the hardest moments of my life,” Baumgartl said after returning four months after his testicular tumor surgery.

Sébastien Haller is far from that far. Borussia Dortmund’s record purchase was diagnosed with a testicular tumor before his first test match for BVB and has been undergoing treatment ever since. He visited the Westfalenstadion for the first time during the Champions League game between Borussia and Copenhagen in early September. However, it is still unclear when Haller will be able to appear as a player for BVB.
