FC Barcelona: That’s why Dembélé’s PSG move really failed – FOOTBALL INTERNATIONAL

This offensive could hardly have been stopped…

At the end of last season, it was uncertain which club Ousmane Dembélé would play for this season. The Frenchman had been bickering about a new contract with FC Barcelona for a long time.

Since the club and the player could not agree, Dembélé’s contract with Barça expired on July 1 and he was available on a free transfer. What Paris Saint-Germain brought to the scene. At the capital club, the ex-Dortmunder could have shone alongside Kylian Mbappé (23), Neymar (30) and Lionel Messi (35).

The French negotiated with the winger for a long time, but ultimately decided against signing Dembélé, who then extended his contract to Barcelona until 2024. In an interview with the broadcaster “RMC Sport”, PSG sports director Luis Campos (58) now explained the decision.

Campos: “I really like Ousmane Dembélé. He’s a very good player but we didn’t sign him because he plays on the wing and we play without a winger. When you put a team together you have to make sure everything fits together like a puzzle.”

The change in personnel at the Parisians probably led to a rethink. French and Spanish media had repeatedly reported that former PSG sports director Leonardo (53) had already negotiated with Dembélé.

However, with the Brazilian leaving alongside coach Mauricio Pochettino (50) after last season, two people who had championed Dembélé at PSG left the club.

So far, however, both sides can live with the decision. PSG has won nine out of ten competitive games so far and made a brilliant start under new coach Christophe Galtier (56).

Meanwhile, Dembélé is regaining his former strength in Barcelona. He scored six points in eight competitive games and, together with Barça newcomers Raphinha (25) and Robert Lewandowski (34), forms one of the most dangerous attacking trios in Europe.
