Head of competitive sports Dirk Schimmelpfennig has to leave the German Olympic Sports Confederation at the end of the year. The DOSB presidium decided unanimously not to extend the expiring contract, the umbrella organization announced.

Association boss Thomas Weikert described this as a “normal process” and said: “In view of the major challenges for competitive sport, we have come to the conclusion that we need a new personal impetus.” The decision was not easy for the DOSB leadership.

Schimmelpfennig will carry out his duties until the end of the year. The successor should be clarified before the general meeting on December 3rd in Baden-Baden.

The former sports director of the German Table Tennis Association came to the DOSB in March 2015. One of his most important tasks is the implementation of the controversial competitive sports reform. At the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, Tokyo and Beijing, the 60-year-old was also head of the German team’s mission.
