This football career cannot be surpassed in terms of ups and downs…

The Dutch ex-Real star Royston Drenthe (35) has (again) found a new club in the Spanish regional league team Racing Merida – the 15th (!) club of his career!

During the week, the deal with the regional league was fixed, as the lower-class club from southwest Spain announced.

In the course of his new job, Drenthe also gave an interview to the Italian “Gazzetta dello Sport” and revealed regarding his time at Real Madrid: “I thought I was God.”

He says that in his time at Real from 2007 to 2012, frustration and happiness were close together. After all, the former mega-talent was unable to establish himself with the “Royal” in the long term, was loaned out twice in the five years before he moved to the Russian club Alania Vladikavkaz without a contract.

Drenthe: “It was 2007 and I was 20 years old, I was at the peak of my career. An insanity difficult to explain, it was a dream to step into a galactic locker room. They are memories I will never forget and will always be in my heart.”

However, the Dutchman also admits that the step to the “White Ballet” came too early: “There is a life as a footballer and a private life, you can mix them up to a certain point. The hardest thing for me was to understand that I needed to change my life immediately. Now I realize I wasn’t there, I made mistakes, life is short and you have to be a professional.”

“I had lost the joy of football and went back to the Netherlands to do other things, I opened a shop,” continues the ex-national player.

But then the Russian club Alania Vladikavkaz would take him against his will. Drenthe: “Every day they called me from Russia and asked me to go there. But I didn’t want to go. A month later, two guys showed up at my store.”

“They came back every day to convince me. In the end I decided to give it a try, I spent a month in a hotel to prepare. I felt like a monster,” reveals the midfield swirler.

Royston Drenthe now wants to have at least some rest in the late autumn of his life as a footballer after his rollercoaster career in the south-west of Spain…
