The Oviedo Badminton Club aspired to return to the sports center after the summer and be able to start the league competition there

Less than a week remains for the start of the highest category of national badminton and the Oviedo Badminton Club (CBO) will not be able to perform as a local at the Corredoria Arena. And it is that these municipal sports facilities continue to have significant water leaks and leaks in the large skylights of their roofs despite the works carried out recently on the roof of the sports center.

The situation is beginning to despair for the board of the Carbayón club, who are also seeing how the organization of some tournaments such as the Women’s Iberdrola Cup, which will be played at the end of this month of September, is complicated.

The intention of the blue entity was to be able to start the league competition that pits the ten best teams in the country at its usual venue. However, the reality is very different and they will have to continue moving to Tudela Agüeria to play their home games, as happened in the final stretch of last season. A sporting and economic damage to the club, as recognized by its president Nicolás García. “We have the Cup and the first league match at the end of this month and we cannot do it at the Corredoria Arena. I don’t know if they are the same or different, but there are still leaks », he comments.

“I know firsthand that the councilor for sports, Conchita Méndez, and the mayor himself are trying to solve it, but for now things are like this,” he acknowledges.

The reforms of the Corredoria Arena, -valued at around 255,400 euros- have been involved in controversy since its inception. The leaks appeared within two weeks of the building opening and since the start of the improvements there have been constant delays due to technical problems and also because of the increase in the price of materials. A circumstance that has forced the clubs that use these facilities to wander for almost a year through different sports centers of the council, despite the fact that the estimated execution time for the works was approximately a month and a half.

“Logically, as things are, we cannot hold the competition there. A training session can be suspended if it starts to rain but we cannot take risks in official matches, ”says the CBO president.

The organization of the women’s Iberdrola Cup already has the approval of the Spanish Federation, which is the main organizer together with the entity itself. «In principle it will be in Tudela Agüeria and that will be detrimental to the club, to the players and family members… It is difficult to move there with all the needs. Some things like the tapestries we will have to bring them from outside. It is a sporting and economic damage.

Total competitiveness

The CBO must continue to use, at least for now, other council facilities and travel to play in some sports venues in which they have not found anything comfortable. Despite everything, «the sporting objective will be the same as always. Do your best. We are a good team, but so are the others. The competition in this sport is increasing. We have to start well and then we’ll see.” The formula for this, according to the president himself, is to keep “a cool head and grounded feet.”
