Moenchengladbach Speculations about Mahmoud Dahoud’s future are off the table. The coveted midfielder from Borussia Mönchengladbach made his decision a year before the end of his contract and is moving to league rivals Borussia Dortmund for the new season.

According to reports, the 21-year-old has an exit clause of ten million euros. The clubs did not want to give any information about the transfer fee. The Dortmund team thus continued their youth trend and, after Ousmane Dembelé and Julian Weigl, secured the services of another young, talented player. “Mo Dahoud is a highly talented and exciting player for central midfield, who we have been watching very closely for several years,” said BVB sporting director Michael Zorc. Zorc emphasized that Dahoud has already shown that he can play at the highest level.

The Gladbachers, who signed the German-Syrian from Fortuna Düsseldorf’s youth team in 2010, would have liked to keep their strong midfielder. “He’s an important player. That hurts,” said Gladbach’s sports director Max Eberl on Thursday. The fact that Dahoud is also switching to a Bundesliga competitor does not make things any easier. “Of course you don’t like to see that,” said Eberl.

The club had demanded a decision from Dahoud after speculation about his future. He had not signed a contract with Gladbach that was ready to be signed and has now announced his intention to change. Eberl also confirmed that defender Andreas Christensen is returning to Chelsea as expected after a two-year loan. “Our most important task now is to find successors for both players,” explained Eberl.

Dahoud was promoted in Gladbach primarily by Lucien Favre. The young player also made his debut in the Bundesliga under the former Borussia coach – but in Favre’s last game. The U21 national player is one of the top-running professionals in the league and played a total of 52 Bundesliga games, 16 European Cup games and seven DFB Cup games for Gladbach. “The decision was extremely difficult for Mo. It’s a shame that a talent is leaving us. But we’ve always managed to replace departures in the past,” said Eberl.
