Carreño runs into Khachanov again

The Spanish tennis player is eliminated from the US Open by a disputed 3-2 (4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6 and 6-3)

The Spanish Pablo Carrenochampion of the recent Montreal Masters 1000, fell this Sunday in five sets against the Russian Karen Khachanov in the round of 16 at the US Open.

Carreño was thus left without a rematch for the defeat that Khachanov inflicted on him last year in the semifinals of the Tokyo Olympics, where the Spaniard later won the bronze medal beating Novak Djokovic.

After more than three hours of battleCarreño, fifteenth in the ATP, gave in to Khachanov (31st) 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 4-6 and 6-3 at the Louis Armstrong court in Flushing Meadows (New York).

Carreño’s elimination joins that of his compatriot Alejandro Davidovich in the morning against the Italian Matteo Berrettini also in five sets.

Spain still has its two main assets, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, who will fight on Monday for a place in the quarterfinals against the American Francis Tiafoe and the Croatian Marin Cilic respectively.

Khachanov, for his part, will face the winner of the cross between the Russian Daniil Medvedev, number one in the ATP, and the Australian Nick Kyrgios.
