Bilbao triathlon, European championship | Traffic closures and timetables in Bilbao and Bizkaia

The cycling tour will begin at 3:20 p.m. and until 8:00 p.m. it may cause cuts on different roads in the province

Bilbao and a large part of Bizkaia will suffer major traffic cuts this Saturday due to the celebration of the Euopa middle-distance triathlon championship. The best international elite category triathletes will meet in this test that will exceed 1,100 registered. It will be the event that closes the triathlon week in Bizkaia, where five championships of different modalities have been held so far.

The medium distance triathlon, the sixth, will be the one that generates the most conditions given the magnitude of the event. The distances are 1.9 kilometers of swimming; 82.5 kilometers of cycling; and 21 kilometers of running. It will be held in Bilbao and the race will touch the Biscayan towns of Etxebarri, Galdakao, Mungia, Bakio, Bermeo, Maruri, Markaida, Urduliz, Leioa and Erandio.

Given these incidents, all the organizers recommend avoiding the use of private vehicles and using public transport, preferably the train or metro, to get to Bilbao, as the Bilbobus and Bizkaibus bus lines will also be affected.

Traffic closures in Bilbao

The race will start at 3:00 p.m., but from 10:00 a.m., the Ramón de la Sota Pier at the Maritime Museum, -from the Euskalduna Palace footbridge to the Olabeaga Pier-, where the arrival and departure will be located, will be closed to pedestrian traffic.

Conditions in the surroundings of the Maritime Museum:

    Access to the Maritime Museum will be freely regulated by signalmen. Also between 2:30 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., approximately, the bike lane between the Guggenheim Museum Rotunda and the Museum’s own loading-unloading access will be occupied, diverting bicycle traffic at the front and rear pedestrians.

Ernesto Square Erkoreka, Avda. Universities and Volantín Field Walk, from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm:

    Traffic cut off at Plaza Ernesto Erkoreka. Access to garages and public transport will be allowed through the Town Hall Bridge and Avenida Zumalacarregui. Public transport will not travel along Avda. Zumalacarregui, between Plaza Erkoreka and Plaza Músico Guridi, in the Parque de Extxebarria direction. Passage will be allowed from Calle Sendeja to Pte. Ayuntamiento and from Avda. Zumalacárregui to Paseo Campo Volantín.

    Cut off the direction of traffic towards the Town Hall at Paseo Campo Volantín, Av. Universidades and Ribera Botica Vieja.

    Alternative routes: Access to Deustu by Ibañez de Bilbao-Alda. Mazarredo-Pte. Deustu | Acceso a Abando por Lehendakari Aguirre-Puente de Deusto | Access to Castaños by: Av. Lehendakari Aguirre-Túnel La Salve-Ugasko-Av. Maurice Ravel Uribarri. Ibáñez de Bilbao-Alda. Mazarredo-Pte. Salve- Avda. Maurice Ravel.

    In Botica Vieja, Avenida de Universidades and Campo Volantín from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., approximately, the parking lot is without access-exit. Therefore, it is forbidden to unpark the vehicle parked in this area during that time.

    Vehicle traffic will be cut off from the Puente de la Merced/Ribera, making way for resident and private car parks and public service. The passage will also be cut from San Nicolás towards Erkoreka Square during the interval from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

From Zumalacárre, from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm:

    A traffic lane will be occupied in the direction of Etxebarri, on Avda. Zumalacárregui, between Plaza Ernesto Erkoreka and Calle Zabalbide. It will not be allowed to cross Avda. Zumalacárregui at Plaza de Músico Guridi or at the roundabout with c/Zabalbide, it being possible to cross said avenue through Doctor Ornilla, Julían Gaiarre-Travesía Párroco Ugaz streets or through Grabriel Aresti street.

    Access to Piedritas Street and Cristo Street will only be allowed through the Avda. Maurice Ravel-Plaza Músico Guridi itinerary.

    Access to the Plaza Quintana car park and the Funeral Home will only be allowed from Plaza Erkoreka.

    Vehicles coming from Avda. Maurice Ravel in the direction of Etxébarri must make a detour through Travesía Párroco Ugaz, making a prohibited turn with prior signaling of lane closure and by means of signalmen.

Olabeaga, from 17:00 to 20:15:

    Traffic access to the neighborhood at the Olabeaga Pier will be cut off, except for the emergency services and Bilbobus.

    Cuesta de Olabeaga is recommended as an alternative entry-exit route to the neighborhood, for vehicles less than 2.5 meters high.

    Leaving the neighborhood through the Olabeaga pier will be allowed, except for occasional cuts to make way for Bilbobus.

Deusto and Zorrozaurre, from 17:00 to 20:10:

    Traffic cutoff, direction City Hall, on Morgan street, between Avda. Madariaga and Julio Urquijo street. Detour through Avda. Madariaga and allowing access to the garages on Calle Morgan, between Avda. Madariaga and the Bernaola Tunnel, from Avda. Madariaga in the opposite direction, regulated by signalmen. Morgan Street towards City Hall will open to traffic around 5:00 p.m.

    Traffic cut in the Bernaola Tunnel, direction Pte. Frank Gehry. Detour through Avda. Lehendakari Aguirre.

  3. 3

    Intermittent traffic cuts, in the access-exit to Zorrotzaurre, in both directions, at the crossroads of Ballets Olaeta Street with Frank Ghery and Julio Urquijo Bridge.

    Cutting of a traffic lane, the closest to the estuary, on Ballets de Olaeta street between the Euskalduna roundabout and the Frank Gehry Bridge.

    Traffic will be cut off at the descent of the Euskalduna bridge (except ambulances to the IMQ) from approximately 3:00 p.m. until 4:45 p.m. The right lane uphill to the entrance to Muelle de Olabeaga will be reserved for cyclists from 4:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

San Ignacio and Ribera Elorrieta, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:10 p.m.:

    Traffic cut in the direction of Deustu, in Ribera Elorrieta, between the border with Erandio and the roundabout with Avda. Zarandoa. Vehicle traffic will be diverted through Enékuri.

    Traffic cutoff at Avda. Zarandoa, between the roundabout with Ribera Elorrieta and Islas Canarias. Vehicle traffic will be diverted along Avda. Lehendakari Aguirre, and the direction of traffic will be changed by means of signalmen at Avda. Lehendakari Aguirre, between the roundabout with Ribera de Elorrieta and Calle Islas Canarias. And on Calle Islas Canarias, between Avda. Lehendakari Aguirre and Calle Aragón.

    Parking in this area is without access-exit. Therefore, it is prohibited to unpark the vehicle parked in this area during this time.

    The access-exit of the garages of Avda. Zarandoa and adjacent streets will be allowed through signalmen and when the traffic of corridors allows it.

Bilbao bus

    Canceled the usual stops of Ribera Botica Vieja, Universidades Avenue and Paseo Campo Volantín towards Plaza Erkoreka.

    The affected lines will be 3-11-22-28-30-40-62-71-72-A1-A5-A7 and A-9. The tour bus will also be modified.

Traffic closures in the rest of Bizkaia

The cycling test of more than 82 kilometers that begins at 3:30 p.m. from the Maritime Museum will affect numerous Biscayan towns. These are the conditions provided by the organization:

– In Bilbao,

Bilbao-Etxebarri/Galdakao

    From the Maritime Museum to leaving the city through Bolueta towards Etxebarri, drivers will not be able to drive in the lane reserved for the race. The first cyclist from the Maritime Museum, Euskalduna Palace, Euskalduna Bridge and towards Ribera Botica Vieja, University of Deusto and Campo Volantín. At the Town Hall roundabout, whose bridge will be the most affected, they will go up towards Ada. Zumalakarregi towards Santutxu to exit through Bolueta towards Etxebarri and Galdakao on the N-634.

Erletxes-Bakio/Bermeo

    Once at the Erletxes roundabout, head towards Larrabetzu to climb Morga, take the Gerekiz turnoff towards Fruiz and towards the Trobika roundabout in Mungia. At this point, the road that goes to Bakio and Bermeo will be affected, whose drivers will have to go through Meñaka where they will be given an alternative way.

Maruri/Markaida-Leioa/Erandio

    Another of the towns whose traffic will be altered will be the area of ​​Markaida and Maruri, so caution is requested and alternatives should be taken beforehand between 4:30 and 6:40 p.m. The race will continue towards Lur Gatika, Castilo de Butrón in the direction of Urduliz, whose exit towards Unbe will be cut off. Then the participants will turn in Akarlanda towards the UPV of Leioa and will go down to Astrabudua between 17 and 19:30. This will make it impossible to enter Astrabudua normally, which will have to be done via Leioa and the estuary road. The other urban center through which the cyclists will pass will be Erandio (17:15 to 19:45) along whose road they will head towards Bilbao to face the last kilometers.

Erandio-Bilbao

    Special caution on Avenida Zarandoa in the San Ignacio neighborhood and as a result of this route, the Enekuri tunnels will also be cut to guarantee safety. All vehicles must enter through Deusto towards Bilbao. The first triathlete is expected to arrive back at the Maritime Museum at around 17:30 and the last before 20:05.

The triathletes will have to complete four laps of the running circuit to complete the half marathon that will determine the new champions of the Bilbao Triathlon and the European Championship. The athletes will go along the left bank of the estuary along the entire Abandoibarra promenade, so they will once again pass such emblematic points as the spider of the Guggenheim Museum or the Zubizuri bridge.
