Liverpool made a surprising move ahead of the close of the summer transfer window. The Reds are trying to bring in Juventus midfielder from Brazil, Arthur Melo.
Reported by Sky Sport Italia and GOAL Italia, Liverpool will borrow Arthur for a season. It is planned that he will undergo a medical test today, Thursday (1/9/2022) afternoon local time.
The news of Liverpool’s interest in Arthur never came before today. The Reds apparently only started approaching the player on Wednesday (31/8) night.
The effort to recruit the 26-year-old player was considered an impromptu step to patch up the Reds’ midfield. That’s why this transfer is only a loan, not permanent.
Arthur’s contract at Juventus runs until 2025, but he has not been the first choice since coach Massimiliano Allegri returned to Turin. Last season, he started just 11 times in 20 appearances in Serie A.
While in this season Arthur has not come down at all. Allegri prioritized Manuel Locatelli and Denis Zakaria to take on the task in midfield. The presence of Leandro Paredes will further marginalize him.
Liverpool seem to need Arthur as a back-up for injury-prone midfielders, such as Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The busy schedule of the competition this season with the 2022 World Cup is believed to make the Reds feel the need for additional midfielders.
Especially at this time, Liverpool only has Fabinho for the type of defensive midfielder. The presence of Arthur is believed to make it easier for manager Jurgen Klopp to rotate.
