Anthony Edwards fined after homophobic statements

Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards fined by NBA for homophobic statements The top pick of 2020 has to pay $40,000.

The 21-year-old had made anti-gay statements on Instagram when he commented on a group of men on his Instagram story. “Look at these weird *****,” Edwards said in the clip. The video has since been deleted and Edwards admitted that he did. The NBA announced this in a statement.

Edwards also apologized on Twitter: “What I said was hurtful and disrespectful. I’m incredibly sorry,” the former No. 1 pick wrote. “There’s no excuse for using those words. That’s not how I was raised.”

The Timberwolves have already reacted. Prior to the NBA’s punishment, Team President Tim Connelly issued the following statement: “We are disappointed in the words and actions of Anthony Edwards, which he has shared on social media. The Timberwolves are an open-minded organization for everyone and we apologize and everyone it hurt.”

Edwards was the first pick in the 2020 draft and scraped the All-Star Game in his second season with the Timberwolves. In 72 games, the “Ant-Man” averaged 21.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists with shooting rates of 44.1 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from the three-point line.
