Andy Murray proposes Federer as new Laver Cup captainHalftime

London England /

The British Andy Murray declared on monday that Roger Federerwho has just retired as a player, was the suitable replacement for Bjorn Borgwho announced on Sunday that he will leave the post of captain of Team Europe after the next edition in Vancouver.

“I’m sure that Roger will continue to be involved in this event one way or another and maybe one day as captain of the team,” said Murray, who even recently said that he is not worthy of a farewell like His Majesty, winner of 20 Grand Slams.

Federer played the last game of his prestigious career on Friday night, during the first day of the Laver Cup, playing in doubles with Rafael Nadal in defeat against Americans Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.

Even before his emotional farewell at the age of 41, the winner of 103 titles on the ATP circuit had already assured that he would continue to be linked to the world of tennis, without having specified in what way.

He stayed by the side of Team Europe, giving advice to his teammates who, despite this, could not avoid the first victory of the Rest of the World Team (13-8) in five editions of the tournament.

Roger is very good on the edge of the track. He watches a lot of tennis, he loves this sport. I think for ex-players who want to become managers, it’s important to stay up to date and get to know the players well,” said Murray, 35, who was once speculated to retire due to multiple injuries.

“I don’t know if it’s something he will do, but I hope he stays active in tennis. He has said he would. He may do a little television. I know how much you love Wimbledon. But yeah, it would be great for tennis to stay close,” he continued.

Novak Djokovicwho was also part of the European team, also believes that “Roger has a lot to offer” in all aspects of tennis and valued him as “someone unrepeatable” for the racket sport, in which for more decades he became -for many- the best of all time.
