The most important basketball tournament at the national team level in the Americas will take place between September 2 and 11 in the Brazilian city of Recife. 12 selected will participate in a tournament that does not award tickets to the main events of the discipline while seeking to improve their positions in the ranking. The expectation around him is high, despite the absence of outstanding players.

The nineteenth edition of the FIBA AmeriCup will take place just over a year late. The tournament returns to Brazil for the first time since 1984, when Sao Paulo hosted the second edition of the event and on that occasion the locals lifted their first title.

The tournament, which would initially take place in the cities of Brasilia and Recife, will finally be played entirely at the Ginásio de Esportes Geraldo Magalhães in Recife and, unlike what happened between 1980 and 2015, the participating teams do not have the pressure of qualify for the World Cup or the Olympic Games.

The format of the competition establishes that the 12 participating teams were divided into three groups and, unlike the 2017 edition when the first of each group plus the host team qualified for the final phase, the first two of each group will advance and the two best third parties to the quarterfinal stage.

This year, and after a classification process similar to that used by FIFA, the teams from Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Canada, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Mexico, the United States, Panama and Venezuela earned the right to participate in the tournament.

During the first day of competitions, the representations of Venezuela and Panama will be in charge of opening the curtain. However, the attention will be focused on the debut of the locals, Argentina and the United States, teams that start as favorites to play the final.

Facundo Campazzo and Chris Duarte lead a group of few stars

Although players like Juan Toscano, the first Mexican NBA champion, or Puerto Rican José Alvarado, a member of the New Orleans Pelicans, represented their countries during the last FIBA window, they do not appear in the preliminary lists for the competition.

According to the tournament website, there will be eight NBA players who will be present at the AmeriCup 2022. They will be led by the Argentine Facundo Campazzo and Chris Duarte from the Dominican Republic and will be joined by Leandro Bolmaro (Argentina, Utah Jazz), Delano Banton (Canada, Toronto Raptors), among others.

On the other hand, in addition to the United States and Canada, which have players with experience in what is considered the best basketball in the world, the Uruguay squad features the name of Esteban Batista, a player who was part of the Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics between 2005 and 2007 in addition to playing commitments in the Euroleague in six seasons and with four different teams.

Additionally, the tournament will serve to see the performance of Alfonso Plummer, a young Puerto Rican who had an outstanding career in American college basketball and has just scored 20 points in Puerto Rico’s defeat against Uruguay in the last FIBA window.

On the other hand, the number of NBA players provided by the event organization portal includes players who were during last season and are currently without a team. Players who were part of NBA quintets but who returned to clubs in Europe or South America are also added.

The tournament will begin one day after the start of the EuroBasket, which is held jointly in Germany, the Czech Republic, Georgia and Italy, and has the participation of up to 30 NBA players, including Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Dončić or Nikola Jokić, to name a few
