Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, 46th in the world, who ended Serena Williams’ career by eliminating her in the 3rd round, qualified for the quarter-finals of the US Open on Sunday by beating Russian Liudmila Samsonova ( 35th) 7-6 (10/8), 6-1.
At 29, Tomljanovic will play her first quarter-final of the New York Major where she had never passed the 3rd round, against the Tunisian Ons Jabeur (5th) or the Russian Veronika Kudermetova (18th).
She has already played Grand Slam quarter-finals twice, at Wimbledon in 2021 and 2022, without managing to climb into the last four.
