A very special season with a thousand and one different goals

What does a coach expect from his team just before the start of the season? An easy question to ask, but rather more difficult to answer. Because the range of possibilities is enormous. It depends on many factors. The antics of the coach himself, the possibilities and capabilities of the squad, the idiosyncrasies of the club. And a long et cetera. The same dilemma has several points of view, which go beyond what happens on the track every weekend. The First National Handball Championship, in a Girona style, will be more special than ever. different It will have up to three clubs from the province, after one level above, the Division of Honor Plata, has been orphaned. UE Sarrià, Handbol Bordils and Handbol Banyoles will share a category from this weekend and for 30 days, until next May. The end, impossible to decipher. The road, still to be built. And this is where Josep Espar, Gerard Farrarons and José Vicente Tomás, Chovi appear. The three coaches, respectively. Only Espar continues from the last year. The other two are released. Each of them with their concerns and goals. With wishes, forecasts and dreams.

The starting shot, today. Bordils will be in charge of debuting first, competing in the Primera Nacional in the last season, but during the previous eight years in Plata. It is no longer time to face Ciudad Real, Zamora, Barça Atlètic and company. From six in the afternoon visit the OAR Sabadell track. The first of many chapters to come. Farrarons reflects on it all. He asks the team to “compete”. There is no talk of promotion or permanence, of being fourth or seventh. It looks beyond, focuses attention on the day to day. “We have to go to the highest possible level during all the games, without stopping to do anything. We will try to make everyone perform with maximum involvement and excitement throughout the season. It’s the most important thing, because the course is very long.” He adds a personal wish: “I would like to reach a good level of play, which is rich and also attractive”.

Later, at eight o’clock, the other two join in. Handbol Banyoles, which has its first coach, receives Sant Esteve de Palautordera. Chovi has taken the reins. It is clear that, looking at the long term, saving the category appears on the list of duties. But for this to be possible, the technician believes that essential steps must first be taken. He talks about “building”, because the coaching staff is new and the group has received new additions. Also to “put together” the dressing room and “consolidate” not only the good atmosphere, but the working dynamics. This is the only way to grow. That’s why he asks for “time” so that “with all these tools, little by little we can work on our game model”, always taking “solid” steps. He speaks at the same time of “competitiveness”, of a lot of “illusion” and is realistic. “We know that we will suffer to get each point, but with this mentality and the support of our fans, we are convinced that the results will come sooner or later.”

Also at eight o’clock the Sarrià is put on. The club knows the category perfectly, but until four days ago its reality was different, competing in Plata. Now it’s time to return to the past, to be aware of what the current scenario is. Josep Espar’s team receives Sant Joan Despí to start. What does the coach expect from all this? For now, “awareness”. He talks about his players. Let everyone know what they’re playing for. “We come from a season in which we went to the sprint, running all day without knowing very well what we were doing.” With this awareness that he claims should come the “maturity in the game” so that “everyone contributes their maximum performance”. Sarrià is experiencing a period of “transition”, with faces that have been changing recently. “We are making a transformation, with new people and those young people who will go up from the second and team and the lower categories”. To all of them, those in the first team and those who will come to lend a hand, Espar asks: “We must know who we are, how we play, what we do well and what we do wrong. In training we will not only come to run, but to improve». No one has talked about going up, about finishing as high as possible. They all focus on the day to day. Starting today and throughout a very special season.
