WTA – Petkovic makes good comeback from injury

Cologne (SID) – Andrea Petkovic has made a good return to the tournament after her injury-related quarter-finals in Hamburg. The 34-year-old from Darmstadt made it into the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Washington with a 6: 2, 6: 2 against the Danish Clara Tauson, who was seeded number eight. There the former world number ninth meets Rebecca Marino. The Canadian qualifier surprisingly knocked out old star Venus Williams (USA) in three sentences on Monday.

Petkovic, number 68 in the world rankings, had to give up her quarterfinals against Estonian Anett Kontaveit in the Hanseatic city due to an adductor injury. She was a finalist there last year and also a tournament ambassador.

Petkovic delivered a spotless performance in Washington. Against Clara Tauson, who is 15 years her junior and number 49 in the ranking, she won the first set after three breaks and 33 minutes. In the second round, the German remained sovereign, took the young star’s serve three times in the first duel and converted her fourth match point after 1:10 hours.
