Women’s U20 World Cup: Germany misses the quarter-finals after Mexico’s defeat – FOOTBALL

World Cup in Costa Rica. How could that happen?

The German team had recovered so well from the opening defeat against Colombia (0:1). Our girls beat the New Zealand U20s 3-0. After the game, goal scorer Sophie Weidauer even said: “We had previously set ourselves the goal of winning all three group games. We were under pressure after the Colombia game, but we showed we could handle it.”

Before the third and last group game, our DFB-Elf was in second place in Group B. A win against Mexico would have even made it possible to win the group. But things turned out differently!

Germany lost 0-1 at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto. The title dreams have burst. The World Cup is of course bitter for the strong DFB team. The horror moment of the tournament was not the 0:1!

In the 3-0 win over New Zealand, Carlotta Wamser sustained a serious facial injury. The 18-year-old attacker from Eintracht Frankfurt sustained a fracture of the eye socket and jaw in the second group game. According to the DFB, she has already had an operation.

Germany at the U20 World Cup

At the U20 World Cup, our youngsters are always among the top favourites. Our girls have already won three world titles (2004, 2010 and 2014) and a second place. And that’s not all: The DFB selection is the only European U20 team that has participated in all ten previous tournaments. Germany’s U20s even broke the magic mark of 50 World Cup games against New Zealand. Record!
