Why are West Ham United fans throwing money at Jesse Lingard against Nottingham Forest?

The midfielder was the target of money thrown by the Hammers supporters in the Premier League match last weekend.

Former Manchester United star Jesse Lingard was pelted with banknotes by West Ham United fans while playing for Nottingham Forest.

The England international joined the Premier League-promoted side after leaving Old Trafford this summer, and played the full 90 minutes in Forest’s first-week defeat to Newcastle United.

Lingard retained his place in Steve Cooper’s starting XI for the game against West Ham, which marked his 300th appearance in England’s top flight, but the Hammers rabid fans are already disappointed in him.

Why are West Ham fans disappointed in Lingard?

Having left United this summer on a free transfer, Lingard is looking for a new challenge.

Reports have linked the midfielder with several clubs in Europe, including Newcastle, West Ham and AS Roma. Lingard spent six months on loan with the Hammers in 2021, scoring nine goals and helping them qualify for the Europa League.

Lingard eventually opted to join Premier League promotion team Nottingham Forest, where he reportedly earns more than £200,000 per week. Many West Ham supporters were disappointed by his decision, which saw him choosing money over joining their club.

How was Lingard’s performance against West Ham?

It was Lingard in the end who smiled as Forest won 1-0 over West Ham at the City Ground. The midfielder even played a part in his team’s victory, albeit unintentionally.

Fellow new Forest signing Harry Toffolo found an unmarked Lingard in the box, but the former United man’s chances were dashed. Fortunately, Ben Johnson made a sweep that hit Taiwo Awoniyi, until the ball went into the West Ham goal.

West Ham had enough chances to equalise, there were two chances on the bar and a penalty saved by Dean Henderson, but Lingard’s Forest survived the onslaught and grabbed their first Premier League win of the season.
