Whoops! Wijnaldum Fractures, Threatened Missing the 2022 World Cup

Roma

Bad news came to AS Roma midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. He suffered a fracture that threatened his chances of appearing in the 2022 World Cup.

Wijnaldum is on loan at Roma after being dumped from Paris Saint-Germain. He has only been with his new club for three weeks and made his debut against Salernitana last week.

Unfortunately, disaster struck Wijnaldum during a training session on Sunday (21/8) afternoon local time. Quoted from the club’s official website, Wijnaldum suffered a broken shin.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Wijnaldum suffered an injury at the end of an internal match due to a duel with his teammate. However, the names of the players are kept secret and are still considered an incident, not intentional.

This fracture injury reportedly requires Wijnaldum to undergo surgery and possibly rest for at least three months. There is a possibility that Wijnaldum could miss playing for the Dutch national team at the 2022 World Cup.

Because if Wijnaldum recovers according to the deadline, then he will only play again in early November and must restore his physical condition. This is of course mepet with the preparation of the Netherlands to Qatar.

“After sustaining an injury in training on Sunday afternoon, Georginio Wijnaldum underwent a scan and the result was a fracture of the tibia in his right leg,” a club statement read.

“Players will undergo further tests in the next few days. FORZA GINI!”

Georginio Wijnaldum also canceled his home debut against Cremonese this week and there is a possibility that AS Roma will find a temporary replacement, given the possibility that the player will be out until the beginning of the year.
