“In my dreams I was like Uwe” |

Olli Dittrich takes an emotional farewell to Seeler

Bye, Uwe!

Big farewell to HSV legend Uwe Seeler († 85). At the funeral service in Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion, 1,000 invited guests and around 4,000 fans say goodbye. Also Chancellor Olaf Scholz (64) with his wife Britta Ernst (61). Scholz: “I was very touched by this farewell here.”

A highlight: The speech by comedian Olli “Ditsche” Dittrich (65) as a friend of the Seeler family. Dittrich was asked by the family if he could give the closing speech. The comedian: “I thought, ‘This is so big, you can’t do it. How am I supposed to prove myself worthy of Uwe and you and decades of your family history here?’”

He does it with emotional words! Dittrich imitates an old radio report about Uwe and put the death of his idol on the same level as that of his parents. When he found out about it, it was like back then. He thought: “Now you are alone.”

Dittrich: “I know you’re looking down now and holding your hand over this stadium, HSV and its loyal fans. You will always be in our hearts.”

And further: “In the dream I was like Uwe. Because Uwe was my great hero, that’s how I wanted to be. Those who knew him well adored him. Uwe Seeler leaves a big gap.”

Black suits, blue sky (26 degrees) and a few veils of clouds – it’s a worthy setting in HSV club colors. Four wreaths of flowers and a small stage in the center circle. Two fan blocks are covered with mourning black fabric. A banner: “Rest in peace.” And sprayed on the lawn: a picture of Seeler. Including his nickname: “Us Uwe”.

HSV-Boss Jonas Boldt: “Uwe Seeler leaves a big gap, we will never forget him: HSV icon, World Cup legend, football idol, honorary captain and Hamburg landmark. Uwe is more than titles and trophies. He is the ideal footballer that every coach dreams of. He is what all people desire. Always on top, but always reachable. Want to win, but can always lose. A man of the people who can only be loved because he was so normal. He’s one of us – only better.”

At the end there are long chants. “Uwe Seeler, you are the best man.” Even ARD man Alexander Bommes (46) has tears in his eyes.

The last song is “In Hamburg they say bye”. Everyone sings along.

A worthy one for one of football’s greatest!

Seeler died on July 21 at the age of 85 and was buried last Thursday in the Ohlsdorf cemetery with the immediate family.
