Usain Bolt wants to trademark his iconic pose

Former US sprinter Usain Bolt filed last week to trademark a pose inextricably linked to his running career.

“With Bolt now retired from racing, it makes sense that he is looking to expand his business empire,” Josh Gerben, a US trademark lawyer, told the BBC.

The pose that the runner repeatedly took after victories has become world-famous and characteristic of Bolt over the years. The runner leans back, one arm bent, the other outstretched and pointing to the sky.

Bolt still holds the record for the 100m and 200m, making him the fastest man in history.

According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, Bolt applied for the trademark on August 17.

The logo, which depicts his iconic pose, is set to be used extensively by Bolt in the future. It should appear on clothes, jewelry and shoes or in restaurants and bars, reveals the application submitted by Bolt.

“The silhouette of his victory pose is recognized around the world. This trademark registration would allow him to offer the items listed in the application separately or to license the right to use the trademark to third parties,” said Gerben.

Bolt applied to register a similar trademark 12 years ago. But it has already disappeared according to American laws.

Usain Bolt holds eight Olympic gold medals. He ended his sports career in 2017 at the world championship in London.
