US Open 2022: Venus Williams receives wildcard to return to US Open

VEnus Williams will return to the US Open this year after receiving a wild card on Wednesday for the tournament that could mark the farewell of her younger sister Serena.

Venus was proclaimed singles champion in consecutive editions of the US Open in 2000 and 2001. This edition marks 25 years since he reached the Flushing Meadows final in 1997, just 17 years old and in his first full season on the professional tour.

To sus 37 years, Williams sat out the US Open last year due to injury. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion recently returned to the circuit from the WTA after being away for almost a year.

Serena Williams, 40, recently announced that he is preparing to say goodbye to tennis, although he did not specify if it would be after the US Open that starts on August 29.

Dominic Thiem, the 2020 Open champion, also received a wild card from the American Tennis Association. The Austrian has recently struggled with injury problems, and is currently ranked No. 228 in the ATP rankings.

The USTA also awarded wildcard invitations to Sofia Kenin, the champion of the Australian Open 2020 and who did not participate last year in New York due to injury. Americans CoCo Vandeweghe, Elizabeth Mandlik, Peyton Stearns and Eleana Yu also received invitations.

Mandlik, daughter of former US Open champion Hana Madilkova, earned her ticket by placing first in the standings after a series of previous tournaments.

also on wednesday, Frenchman Gael Monfils withdrew from the US Open due to the injury to his right foot he suffered last week during his match against Jack Draper in Montreal. Monfils reached the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in 2016.

Japan’s Taro Daniel entered the main draw.
