Tim Merlier after Sam Bennett gave up: “Even harder to get a bunch sprint” | Vuelta

The abandonment of Sam Bennett, the umpteenth corona case, is the news of the day in the Vuelta for the time being.

“That makes it even more difficult to get a bunch sprint tomorrow,” says Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Deceuninck).

Bora-Hansgrohe will no longer cooperate. “Then we are the only team, with maybe Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) or Kaden Groves (BikeExchange), although they do not always cooperate.”

One less competitor, but above all one less interested team. “I prefer to have as many sprinters as possible, also for the days afterwards on the bus.”

“Tomorrow we will go full for a stage win. It would have been nicer with Sam still there, but we will do everything for it.”

“I feel okay, I just need to get in the right position and have some luck.”
