Do you like tales and legends, duels between knights or the habits and customs of medieval times? If so, direction Hauville (your)close to Bourg Achardthis Sunday, August 7, 2022, for the great and traditional medieval festival organized by the association Roumois Terres Vivantes in Normandy. The event takes place on the site of the stone mill. Visitors will be able to discover and take part in a range of activities presented by Brothers Galea et Proud Normanstwo local associations passionate about the era of Middle Ages.
New: Trebuchet shooting
“Fascinated by history, we meet regularly to share our research and thus fully understand this period. We are particularly interested in daily life in the Middle Ages and more specifically in the period from the 10th to the beginning of the 14th century”, summarizes Clélia Eudeline, president of the Fratres Galea association whose head office is located in Hauville, on the site of the stone mill. The volunteers recreate scenes of period life and offer demonstrations of sword fighting and archery.
For this new edition of the medieval festival, the association will produce for the first time a Trebuchet shooting demonstration, this powerful war machine to send cannonballs. In the Middle Ages, it was used to destroy walls or to launch projectiles over fortifications. Another novelty, the development of a field hospital to understand the care given to the sick thanks to medicinal places.
A workshop on medieval town planning will have the theme “the city in the Middle Ages”. Not to mention siege weapon workshops, demonstrations and Bayeux embroidery initiations or even a culinary workshop. Note that in Latin, “fratres” and “galea” mean respectively “brothers” and “helmet”.
Artistic fencing demonstrations
The second association called “Les fiers Normans” has concocted a program rich in demonstrations of combat scenes with real weapons. Every Thursday evening, the members, specialized in the practice of medieval fencingtrain in the village hall of Bourneville-Sainte-Croix :
We practice artistic fencing with real swords and dressed in armour. You should know that all blows are struck.
Equipped with a coat of mail or steel plate depending on the time of the Middle Ages (between the 13th and 14th century), the volunteers also reconstruct medieval camps and make discover the crafts of the time.
craft market
Throughout the day, a craft market and many stands will allow visitors to learn about all the subtleties of the Middle Ages through a calligraphy workshop, a book fair, demonstrations of wood carving, weapon making in wood, braiding steel or glass engraving.
Many objects will be on sale: decorated horseshoes, handmade leather objects, handcrafted jewellery, medicinal plants and flowers, Celtic ceramics, stones and candles… Not to mention local products such as honey, royal jelly, jams, spirits… Children can enjoy organized pony rides in the countryside surrounding the site of the stone mill.
Sunday August 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Hauville medieval festival, rue du moulin de pierre, 27350 Hauville. Admission: €4 for adults; €1 for young people aged 8 to 16 and free for children under 8. Free parking. Snack bar and catering on site (several meal or picnic formulas).
