Tennis: Ugo Carabelli defeated Thiago Tirante in the final of the Lima Challenger

If Camilo Ugo Carabelli’s 2022 was already good, this Lima Challenger helped him improve the equation. In the capital of Peru, the Argentine defeated Thiago Tirante from La Plata and won the third title in his career. The man from Buenos Aires defeated his compatriot 6-2 and 7-6 (4) and added another trophy to his showcase. He had previously been consecrated in Tigre 2 (2022) and Warsaw (2021). In this way, the new champion will be Top 100 from today.

The start of the match was marked by Tirante, who hurt with the return and got the early break to get ahead in the score. However, Ugo Carabelli did not despair, he put on his overalls and fought from behind. With an absolutely overwhelming tennis, the tennis player from Buenos Aires won six games in a row, totally unstoppable, to take the set 6-2 in 38 minutes.

The second set was a tremendous battle of compatriots. They both got into fighting mode, ran all the balls and put on a real show. After breaking twice each, they defined the drama movie in the tie break. There, Camilo Ugo Carabelli dominated widely to be the champion 6-2 and 7-6 (4) after 2h08m.

This victory also puts him in the Top 100 for the first time in his career, joining other Argentines such as Diego Schwartzman (15th), Francisco Cerúndolo (27th), Sebastián Báez (35th), Federico Coria (73rd) , Pedro Cachín (88th) and Tomás Etcheverry (90th).

In 2022, Ugo Carabelli also had an outstanding participation at Roland Garros. There he went through qualifying defeating Yuichi Sugita, Ernesto Escobedo and Alexander Ritschard to later debut in the first round and defeat none other than Aslan Karatsev. In the second round it was Félix Auger-Aliassime who put an end to the dream.

A spectator yelled “loser” at Medvedev

After his consecration in Los Cabos, the number 1 in the world arrived as the top favorite at the Montreal Masters 1000, but in his debut he was played by the always complicated Nick Kyrgios, and finally said goodbye in the first round after falling 6-7 (2 ), 6-4 and 6-2.

But that was not all. When he was leaving the court after the defeat against the Australian, the Russian tennis player had to accept an offensive comment from a spectator, who shouted “loser (loser)” at him from the other side of the fences. Medvedev heard him and did not let him pass: he immediately turned around to face the person in charge.
