Freestyle swimmer Lukas Märtens confidently advanced to the semi-finals over 200 meters on Sunday morning after his silver medal at the European Championships.

The 20-year-old swam in Rome after 1:47.24 minutes and swam the fifth fastest time. “I was able to swim with my eyes,” said the Magdeburger. “That went great.” The Hungarian Kristof Milak was the best of the heats in 1:46.26 minutes. Sharing 13th place, Poul Zellmann also swam into the next round in the evening.

Märtens had won silver in the 800-meter distance on Saturday. “I tried to calm down as much as possible,” he said. “Of course, the mood was super good, but I still had to get some sleep. I think that worked out quite well.” Looking ahead to the evening session this Sunday, Märtens added: “We’ll see what’s still in the tank today.”
