Haller: “The word tumor was a shock”
“I’m doing well!”
All Borussia Dortmund fans hear these words with great joy. BVB striker Sébastien Haller (26) gave a detailed interview for the first time after his testicular cancer surgery.
The sick footballer spoke to ESPN about the difficult time: “It’s a new situation for everyone. Especially for my family and me. I’m lucky to have a lot of people around me and to get a lot of support.” Haller continues: “I’m also lucky that I don’t feel bad. I can go for a walk every day and spend time with my family and friends. So that everything is in order.”
The Dortmunder has given a lot of thought to the fact that he will be missing from the club for a long time: “We have done a lot for this transfer. Everyone was happy and I really wanted to play. Thirty million euros were paid for me and I can’t play for months. That doesn’t seem like a good deal, I thought at the time. But I couldn’t help it. You couldn’t have avoided it or changed it.”
The discovery of his illness came as a shock to Haller. It all started with a strange feeling in his stomach, as the Frenchman explains: “The first ultrasound was done at nine o’clock in the evening, an MRI scan the next day at nine o’clock in the morning. Then came the biopsy because a tumor was found.” He recalls the moment with horror: “When you hear the word, it’s shocking.”
Haller was taken to the hospital, underwent surgery and received treatment. His return to the pitch will take months. But he is already dreaming of a comeback. His plans: “It’s important that I don’t lose too much muscle mass. I have to keep fit. A month before I return to the field, I will do some ball work again. Now the most important thing is that my body feels good.”
His big dream: “My first goal is to get back on the pitch. Playing in front of the ‘Yellow Wall’ and scoring my first goal. It will be a beautiful and emotional moment.”
