Andrea Petkovic is in the round of 16 in Washington.

After dropping out of the quarter-finals in Hamburg due to injury, Petkovic made a good return to the tournament. At the $251,750 hard court event, the Darmstadt native will now meet Canadian Rebecca Marino, who surprisingly defeated American Venus Williams in three sets on Monday.

World number 68 Petkovic had to give up her quarter-final against Estonian Anett Kontaveit in the Hanseatic city due to an adductor injury. The 34-year-old was last year’s finalist and tournament ambassador.

Petkovic delivered a spotless performance in Washington. Against Clara Tauson, who is 15 years her junior and number 49 in the ranking, she won the first set after three breaks and 33 minutes. In the second round, the German remained sovereign, took the young star’s serve three times in the first duel and converted her fourth match point after 1:10 hours.
