Born on February 28, 1966 in the Portuguese city of Montijo, Paulo Futre made his debut in the highest category of Portuguese football wearing the Sporting de Portugal shirt, although he rose to fame during his time at Porto, a team to which he belonged for three seasons and with which he lifted two leagues, a Portuguese Super Cup and a European Cup.

In 1987 he joined Atlético as the star signing of Jesús Gil, recently elected as president of the mattress entity. His impact was immediate and he ended up becoming one of the great legends of Atlético, who still reveres his goals and his competitive nature. Capped forty-one times by the Portuguese national team, Futre subsequently went through the ranks of Benfica, Olympique de Marseille, Reggiana, Milan and West Ham, before returning to Atlético to play ten games in the 1997-98 campaign and retire that same year wearing the jersey of the Japanese Yokohama Flugels. Once the boots were hung up, the Portuguese was Atlético’s sports director, a position from which he contributed to returning the rojiblanco team to the First Division after a couple of years in the hell of the silver category.

As soon as the news of his hospitalization was known, Atlético rushed to show him the affection of the mattress parish. “We send a lot of encouragement and a lot of strength to our legend Paulo Futre. We wish you a speedy recovery. The entire athletic family is with you, ”says the statement released by the club chaired by Enrique Cerezo through its social networks.
