In July, Paris St. Germain (PSG) announced the dismissal of coach Mauricio Pochettino (50). Because the Argentine couldn’t win the Champions League with the Parisians in 18 months either, he had to leave.
Now Pochettino, who was able to celebrate three national titles with PSG (the 2021 Cup and Supercup and the 2022 French Championship), is settling accounts with his ex-employer.
In an interview with the Argentine portal “Infobae” he says: “There are teams like Liverpool or Manchester City that focus on long-term projects and give you a chance.” According to Pochettino, Paris does not do this.
He continues: “We lose against Madrid and of course we know that there will be problems. City also lose to Madrid, but a week later they buy Haaland and allow the manager to reinvent himself.”
Background to this comparison: In the Champions League, Pochettino and Paris were eliminated just as bitterly and narrowly by eventual winners Real Madrid as Manchester City.
The reactions of the clubs could hardly be more different. Pep Guardiola’s side have signed Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland (22) from BVB for 60 million to attack the target again next season with the same coach and improved team.
