Novak Djokovic: Decision made about US Open participation – TENNIS

The US Open (from August 29th to September 11th) will take place this year without superstar Novak Djokovic (35)!

The 21-time Grand Slam winner is not on the tournament’s official entry list. The reason is apparently that Djokovic is not allowed to enter the USA as he has not been vaccinated.

Djokovic is still not vaccinated against the corona virus. The Serb had therefore hoped that the entry regulations would be changed until the very end.

The Serb wrote on Twitter: “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to travel to NY for the US Open this time. Thank you #NoleFam for your messages of love and support. Good luck to my fellow players! I will stay in good shape and positive mood and wait for an opportunity to compete again. See you soon, tennis world!”

The US Open published the tournament’s potential field of participants at the end of July. Djokovic was still on this list. However, even then, the organizers declared that they would respect the applicable US regulations. They state that foreigners without corona vaccination protection are not allowed to enter the USA.

The statement said: “The US Open does not require players to be vaccinated, but will respect the US government’s position on the entry of unvaccinated non-US citizens.”

Because nothing changed, Djokovic cannot compete. And that is sporty bitter for him!

Due to his lack of vaccination, he already missed the Australian Open in January. Rival Rafael Nadal (36) won the title in Melbourne in his absence and then after a quarter-final win against Djokovic also the French Open, now has 22 Grand Slam titles. Djokovic just snatched title number 21 with the Wimbledon victory.

The US Open is now the chance for Nadal to pull away from a Grand Slam victory again. Without Djokovic himself being able to prevent it!

In addition to Djokovic, another tennis superstar will be missing in New York: Alexander Zverev (25)! He canceled his participation due to a torn ligament.

The women’s and men’s singles title winners will each be rewarded with $2.6 million. At least 1.3 million dollars are earmarked for the finalists. The doubles winners will receive $688,000 as a team.
