For Jannik Sinner, the Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal ended in the round of 16. He didn’t stand a chance against Spain’s high-flyers on Friday night (CEST).

Jannik Sinner (ATP 12) played the last match of the evening on Thursday evening (local time) on Center Court. And it turned out to be a quick number: the Sextner was just 1.24 hours on the pitch, which he had to leave bitterly with a 2:6, 4:6 defeat. A defeat that came about for two reasons: On the one hand, Sinner didn’t do much together on the slow hard court in Canada’s metropolis, on the other hand, his opponent Pablo Carreño Busta once again played really well.

The Spaniard is surprisingly in top form in Montreal. In the first two rounds, the 31-year-old, who is ranked 23rd in the world, eliminated two top players in two sets each, Matteo Berrettini (ATP 14) and Holger Rune (ATP 26). He needed 78 minutes for Berrettini and only 58 minutes for Rune. Now Sinner also had to ungrudgingly acknowledge the dominance of the Iberian.

For the South Tyrolean, the match in Montreal was ill-fated from the start. Already in the third game he had to give up his serve. In addition, the 20-year-old from Pusterer made too many mistakes of his own, 15 in the first set alone, 12 of them with the forehand. Only 33 percent of his first serves went into the field. For comparison: With Carreño Busta it was 74 percent. And so there was another break from the veteran, who converted his first set ball to 6:2 after just over half an hour.

Not a single break chance for Sinner

Little changed in the second half of the game either. Although Sinner got better control of his service, the timing from the baseline was still lacking and he still made many unforced errors. So there was no herb against a caliber like Carreño Busta. In the entire match, he didn’t allow a single breakball and took advantage of the opportunity in the fifth game. In front of the eyes of NHL star Jonathan Huberdeau – who recently signed an eight-year contract with the Calgary Flames – Carreño Busta converted his first match point to 6: 4 after 1.24 hours.

The death of favorites in Montreal continues. In addition to Sinner, Berrettini, Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev have also said goodbye early. Carreño Busta meets British qualifier Jack Draper in the Quarterfinals.
