NBA 2K23 is this year’s edition of the basketball game developed by Visual Concepts. While there has been absolutely no competition in the basketball simulation genre since EA discontinued the NBA Live series (the latest entry was NBA Live 19), the game has improved in several ways each year and NBA 2K23 is no different.

Game mechanism

This year’s installment features the return of Jordan Challenge fashion more than ten years after its last appearance. NBA2K23 players will experience 15 key moments in Michael Jordan’s career, from the 1982 NCAA National Championship to the 1998 NBA Finals. There will also be changes to suit the era, such as increased focus on post and mid-range play and a reworking of transition play, including tighter transition paths and more players cutting the basket with a numerical advantage.

Visual Concepts also recently detailed the overall gameplay improvements planned for this iteration. On next-gen consoles (sadly PC still lags behind PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch), player AI offers better ball handling, pick and roll execution, defensive tendencies, and training decisions.

Shooting attributes have been added across all platforms, giving each jump its own unique shooting stats that help determine its effectiveness. The developer has also added five new hit counters and another fifteen will be unlocked throughout the year during the season.

The defense has also been improved. Blocks have been adjusted to a more realistic level, leading to a more predictable outcome, with the right players making the right stops while timing their block attempts well. Visual Concepts also claims significant improvements in ball safety for good hunters and more.

The playmaker is not left behind thanks to the new Gesture Combo for shooting and ball management. A new concept has been introduced to prevent overdribbling: players have three Adrenaline Boosts per possession, and once finished after a hard throw or explosive sprint, there is a significant drop in speed and deceleration for the rest of possession.

The revised team acquisition system in NBA 2K23 serves as a collaborative effort where the entire team shares a meter.
