Mercato: how Piqu can save the summer of Bara

Unable to register its new recruits with La Liga, FC Barcelona will have to find a solution to free up cash. While the Catalans owe him €52 million in salary, central defender Gerard Piqu has the possibility of taking on the role of savior.

Grard Piqu will become a financial burden for Bara.

By activating several economic levers since the start of the transfer window, including the sale of part of its TV rights for the coming years, FC Barcelona has so far managed to achieve a very attractive transfer window despite great financial fragility.

Franck Kessi, Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and even Jules Kound have notably been recruited. Problem, the Blaugrana seem for the moment unable to register these flashy recruits.

Bara owes €52 million to Piqu!

From then on, three options are possible to clean up tight finances: the Catalans can sell players – we think in particular Memphis Depay or Frenkie de Jong who have good market values – or activate a new lever. But that’s not all. As local media ARA explained on Friday, the slender team can also engage in discussions with their central defender Gerard Piqu to push him to accept a pay cut.

A last privileged option since at present, the Bara simply owes the sum of 52 million euros to its vice-captain! While the 35-year-old had agreed to postpone the payment of several of his salaries, the equivalent of 70% of his income over the last two years, due to the post-Covid-19 crisis in particular, the residents of Camp Nou have run up a big debt which they now have to settle this season.

Pique isn’t even a first choice anymore

A real burden for the 2nd in the last Liga, who therefore has no choice but to negotiate a new arrangement at the risk of going from dream to nightmare. So inevitably, the discussions promise to be tough, not to say irritating, since the player has already made great financial efforts in the recent past. But Bara no longer has any other room for maneuver in this file. Especially since the amount of Piqu can challenge while the former Mancunian no longer even appears as a first choice in the eleven of his coach Xavi.

Indeed, the former Mancunian now seems to be slipping behind Christensen, Kound, Eric Garcia and Ronald Araujo in the backbone defensive hierarchy. From then on, the Barcelona executive had the opportunity to go from being a hero’s ball on a financial level. And the Catalan management and its supporters only hope for that.

In your opinion, should Piqu agree to a new arrangement with Bara? Do you understand the management of the Catalan club? Do not hesitate to react and discuss in the area add a comment
