Medvedev advances to the round at the Los Cabos Mexican Tennis Open

MEXICO CITY, Aug 3 (Reuters) – Russian Daniil Medvedev, number one in the world, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis Los Cabos on Wednesday after defeating Australian Rinky Hijikata in straight sets.

The 26-year-old Russian, who had not been active since June, defeated the ATP number 224 in 90 minutes 6-4 6-3 based on his powerful serve with which he registered five aces.

“Happy to get the 250th victory of my career, looking to get many more and with good feelings after not playing since June. The feelings in Los Cabos have been very nice and seeing the sea makes me very happy,” Medvedev told the network. ESPN after the game.

In the last game of the first set, Medvedev recovered from trailing 40-15 and broke Hijikata’s serve for victory.

In the second set, Medvedev suffered less to defeat the 21-year-old Aussie and closed out the match in easy fashion.

In the next round, Medvedev will face Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis on Thursday, who beat Argentine Facundo Bagnis 7-6(4) and 6-3.
