Man City’s second goal against West Ham belongs to Grealish

Manchester

Pep Guardiola praised Jack Grealish’s role in Manchester City’s win over West Ham United. Grealish was the key to The Citizens’ second goal.

Manchester City opened their debut in the 2022/2023 Premier League by overthrowing West Ham United 2-0 at London’s Olympic Stadium, Sunday (7/8/2022). The Citizens’ two winning goals were bought by their new striker Erling Haaland through a penalty in the 36th minute and in the 65th minute.

Haaland is indeed the decisive victory for Man City in this match. However, the Man City manager, was reluctant to play down the role of other Citizens players in this victory.

Haaland’s second goal in this match was born from the slick cooperation of the Man City players from the defense. Guardiola appreciated Jack Grealish’s role in Haaland’s goal process.

The reason is, Grealish can provoke two West Ham United players to press on the Man City defense. He was able to eliminate the pressing until Rodri was free to pass the ball to Kevin De Bruyne to create Haaland. Grealish’s role is considered very important by Guardiola when facing a team waiting to defend.

Praise to Grealish shows that Guardiola still fully believes in the ability of the English winger. Last season, Grealish was criticized by several parties for his minimal contribution by only making three goals and three assists in the Premier League. In fact, he was redeemed expensively by Man City worth 105 million pounds from Aston Villa.

“The second goal was a great action for Jack. The goal was his. He kept the ball, caught the opponent, found the perfect ball for Rodri, it happened with space and then Kevin was hard to stop. We will find a lot of games with five defenders in the box. We have to find a way out,” Guardiola was quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.
