Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are considered to be among the greatest contenders for the international tennis throne. But there is no trace of rivalry between the two mega talents, on the contrary: at the ATP tournament in Montreal, they attracted everyone’s attention with a joint action.

It was Sunday afternoon (local time) when the attention of tennis fans at the Masters tournament in Montreal shifted from Center Court to the sprawling facility at Parc Jarry. The reason: Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.

In the shadow of the 12,000-seat Stade IGA, the two youngsters chased each other across a training ground with breathtaking rallies.

Alcaraz had asked Sinner for a spontaneous practice session in order to prepare as best as possible for the tournament in the Canadian metropolis that starts on Monday. For Alcaraz, his two most recent appearances against Sinner may have played a role. Having previously been unbeaten in a direct duel, he most recently lost to Sinner in both the Wimbledon round of 16 and the Umag final.

“Sinner’s aggressiveness in the game is impressive.”

However, there was no sign of a budding rivalry at the training game in Montreal. Both of them joked and laughed, hugged and posed for photos together, which were later shared on their respective social media channels. “Sinner’s aggressiveness in the game is impressive, it also surprised me how he stands on the pitch,” Alcaraz recently said in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport said.

See you in the semifinals?

There could be a reunion for both of them on the hard courts of Montreal. If they are as successful as they were recently in Croatia, a semi-final between Sinner and Alcaraz is in prospect. Both have a bye in the first round. The 19-year-old Spaniard (ATP 4) meets Vasek Pospisil or Tommy Paul on Tuesday or Wednesday. Sinner, who slipped to 12th place in the world rankings this Monday, meets the winner of the duel between Adrian Mannarino (ATP 70) and Arthur Rinderknech (67).

Sinner in double action

The two qualifiers from France will face each other late on Monday evening (CEST), immediately before that Sinner will play in doubles on the same side pitch. Together with the Canadian local hero Pospisil, he takes on the French duo Benjamin Bonzi/Gael Monfils in the first round. The game is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. (CEST).
